fnck

fnck is Funkwhale instance on VNL Antipostal; a community-driven project that lets you listen and share music and audio within a decentralized, open network.

This page serves as a landing to present you fnck-related articles that would benefit from a bigger screen real estate than Funkwhale provides. The documentation on this site should cover things specific to fnck , for general Funkwhale help, you can find help menus within the app itself.

Overview

fnck/Funkwhale lets you be your own streaming music provider without a monthly fee. Additionally, you can share your music with your friends just as you'd lend a SACD, CD, etc back in the 2000s. Funkwhale is a federated platform and this is enabled in fnck, meaning you can connect with other Funkwhale users outside of fnck. They must be in Funkwhale instances that also have federation enabled, of course.

VNL Antipostal does not provide any audio content, not even samples. You are responsible for uploading and maintaining your music library. Your music library remains private unless you choose to share it. If you are an artist, Funkwhale helps you promote your music, please refer to Funkwhale's documentation for information in regards to this.

Storage Capacity

Funkwhale's project comes with a 1GB storage capacity limit. We think that's rather low but at the same time we need to think about the potential implications of raising this limit such as how much would it impact our storage servers and other apps that might be using it times the number of simultaneous users not just in fnck, but in several other VNL Antipostal services.

We settled for 16GB, or about the minimum capacity the last iPods had. This can be raised on a per-user basis, but even if it isn't, it should be enough for a few albums, or about 2000 4min songs in iTunes Plus encoding (AAC 256Kbps/stereo, 44.1kHz, VBR). This would be drastically reduced in Electronica music genres, with single song durations as high as 12min or DJ sets of over 60min in length which given the self-promotion features of Funkwhale, it's very likely to be case in many instances.

f-x-x-k-w-h-a-l-e

Yes, it is intentionally misspelled. But we thought, who gives a f*ck, we're here for the music, right? Which coincidentally that very thought fits right in with our theme. To pronounce it, we spell it as it is "f-n-c-k" or we pronounce it as "funk", "fuck", or "fuckwhale", never "Funkwhale" out of respect for the project and to avoid mixing the two.

Additionally, it's always written using the same case for all letters: lowercase letters. It's OK for it to be in all upper caps but we haven't gotten around it. The reason is because in lowercase letters the N looks very similar to the shape of an U and — with creative transformation and a little bit of lighting — it can loosely resemble the shape of a C as well.

Finally, and this may serve as a mnemonic device; anywhere where it's written near the concept of an address (URL) it will always be written using the four letter sequence "fnck". You'll only see the whole nine letters in the logo, for the most part and in reference material such as this.
