Mozilla Firefox Enterprise ESR Installed
This is Mozilla Firefox Enterprise Extended Support Release managed by PremLINK to enhance privacy and ease of access to PremLINK's services. It was installed automatically1) through domain policies2) together with Google Chrome Enterprise.
PremLINK Intervention
Both of these browsers despite their user friendliness claims, come with full support for enterprise deployment which is exactly how PremLINK deploys them. Enterprise versions of software is really a nicer way of saying it's completely controlled, supervised, monitored and this type of software usually has much more control that the one offered for consumers. This control however, is not given to the end users, it's given to the IT admins.
PremLINK uses these tools against their intended use to give end users vastly superior privacy and much more enjoyable experience that any browser available on the browsers users already know.
Here's a list of some of the modifications made.
- Updates are completely disabled.
- This option if not available for the consumer version of either browser. Firefox has a way to prevent automatic updates but checks are still made and constant reminders are presented randomly
- The browser is updated via policies just like it was installed
- Updates occur when the user logs in to the computer if the latter can contact a Domain Controller or macOS Server machine.
- The software is downloaded from VN's storage servers. Only some updates are published; those that have compelling reasons for them and after they have been tested. Not every single version.
- The browser's built-in privacy tools are disabled, e.g; Enhanced Privacy Protection in Firefox.
- The built-in privacy tools of most browsers, including Firefox and Chrome, send data to Google and Mozilla for these "privacy" features.
- In it's place the extension uBlockOrigin is automatically installed. This is an open source, crowed sourced, real privacy tool.
- Analytics are disabled.
- Analytics, studies, user experience-anything, crash reports, certificates reports, etc are all disabled.
- First party advertising/product offers are disabled.
- The New Tab page, Pocket, VPN offerings, all of those and similar are not nuisances anymore.
- Unique enhancements are disabled.
- The built-in password managers are disabled. KeePassXC is a cloud-free cross-platform extension and password manager that doesn't lock the user to a single browser and doesn't upload user information to some server in the cloud under the control of advertising companies.
- Contacts and address data from autofill tools are disabled. KeePassXC and other services such are those hosted on Cloudia (or any other Nextcloud instance) can offer the same thing.
- Encrypted DNS is disabled.
- It's not the browser's place to resolve DNS directly, the host OS should do that for the browser.
- Encrypted DNS is used by advertisers and other bad actors to bypass network-provided ad-blocking, virus and other kinds of malware protections.
